Jim MacLellan
Retired Director of Trade Development for the Port of Los Angeles
As director of trade development for the Port of Los Angeles, Jim was responsible for outreach to cargo owners and their professional associations, until his retirement in 2018 after 26 years of service. He also directed trade promotion programs to encourage increased business through Southern California. This includes outreach efforts to assist small to medium size business to consider global markets. He held this position since 2007, and previously was Director of Marketing, at which time he directed marketing programs, coordinated ten international offices and worked to build the Port’s long-term clientele. Prior to joining the Port in 1992, he worked for more than 22 years in the private sector of the international shipping business, which included many years in Europe. Jim received the Stanley T. Olafson Lifetime Achievement during the LA Chamber World Trade Week in 2018.

Jim holds a bachelor’s degree in economics and political science from Sir George Williams University. In the past, he has taught a course on shipping and transportation for UCLA Extension and for the international MBA program at UCLA’s Anderson Graduate Business School. Since 2008 he conducted an annual intensive course on trade and shipping at the Monterey Graduate School of International Policy Studies. He was a Director of the U.S. – Mexico Chamber of Commerce (Southern California), the Foreign Trade Association and the Southern California District Export Council of the U.S. Department of Commerce.
