Assemblymember Patrick O'Donnell was first elected to the State Assembly in November 2014 to represent the 70th District, which includes the cities of Long Beach, San Pedro, Signal Hill and Catalina Island. Assemblymember O’Donnell is also a former Long Beach City Councilmember and a teacher with over 20 years of experience.
As the Chair of the Assembly Education Committee, he is a leading voice in the Legislature for access to high-quality public education. He helped establish the California College Promise and secured $15 million in the state budget to take the success of the Long Beach College Promise statewide. In 2018, he was instrumental in securing $150 million for the Career Technical Education Incentive Grant Program. He is also the author of bills signed by the Governor that support working families through state apprenticeship programs and ensure that our schools are constructed with highly skilled workers.
Known as “the voice of the ports” in Sacramento, Assemblymember O’Donnell is the Chair of the Assembly Select Committee on Ports and Goods Movement. In this capacity, he works to educate his colleagues on the complex challenges and opportunities faced by the freight sector, supply chain and logistics industries. Representing an area that is a major source of employment to the region, he brings a balanced perspective to the Legislature.
Born in Long Beach, Assemblymember O’Donnell graduated from California State University, Long Beach with a degree in History and a Master's Degree in Public Administration.
